1mediumapple, peeled and diced (recommended: Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
1/2cuppacked brown sugar
1/4cupchopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
1cupcaramel sauce (can be store-bought or homemade)
to tastepowdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
In a small bowl, pour the warm milk and add the sugar and yeast. Stir gently to combine and allow the mixture to sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy. This is your yeast mixture.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Create a well in the center, and pour in the melted butter, egg, and the activated yeast mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until a cohesive dough begins to form.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it for 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased mixing bowl. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
After the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release the air. Turn it out onto a floured surface and roll it into a rectangle approximately 12x18 inches in size.
In a separate bowl, combine the diced apples, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and chopped nuts (if using). Mix well, then evenly spread this apple mixture over the rolled-out dough, ensuring to cover all areas.
Starting from one long edge of the dough, tightly roll it into a log. Make sure to pinch the seams shut to secure the filling inside.
Slice the log into 12 equal portions and place them cut side up in a greased baking dish, keeping them spaced slightly apart. Cover again with a towel and allow them to rise for an additional 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Once preheated, bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until they are golden brown and your kitchen smells delicious.
When baked, remove the rolls from the oven and allow them to cool for about 10 minutes. Drizzle the warm caramel sauce generously over the rolls while they are still slightly warm.
To enhance presentation and sweetness, finish with a light dusting of powdered sugar just before serving.
Notes
Arrange the rolls on a large serving platter, cascading extra caramel sauce over the top and garnishing with a sprinkle of finely chopped nuts or a few apple slices for a pop of color.
